Bernice Beard, author of At Your Own Pace: Traveling Your Way in Your Motorhome, is a veteran motorhomer whose more than 65 trips with her husband included a 44-day caravan through Alaska and a 5-week excursion from Maryland to Arizona. She chronicled these trips in four books, including Alaska at Your Own Pace: Traveling by RV Caravan and Colorado at Your Own Pace: Traveling by Motorhome with Friends. Her most recent book, 301 Ways to Make RV Travel Safer, Easier, and More Fun, was recommended by the New York Times.
Formerly, a popular speaker at RV events and an often-requested guest on radio shows, Beard frequently served as an expert resource for newspapers and magazines throughout the country. In addition, her columns and articles appeared online; in magazines including BottomLine Tomorrow, Mature Traveler, Family Motor Coaching, and Holidays; and in numerous newspapers throughout the country.
On the road, Beard collected information, took photographs, and recorded observations in her laptop computer, working in a specially adapted office space in the Beards’ motorhome. These materials and insights provided the basis for her manuscripts, such as At Your Own Pace, her first book, which Beard decided to write when a friend kept asking discerning questions about motorhoming.
A Maryland native, Beard earned both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Liberal Arts degrees from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) where she was also employed full time until her retirement.
Beard was a member of the Family Motor Coach Association, the Good Sam Club, the Westminster Church of the Brethren Camping Group, and the Holiday Rambler Recreational Vehicle Club. She also belonged to the American Association of University Women and remains a charter member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. She was listed in Who’s Who of American Women.
RV travel was a source of joy and adventure for Beard and her late husband, Paul. They camped on weekends and took a major trip of several weeks or months each year.
Beard currently resides in Florida and is an active member of the “Just Write” Writers’ Guild at The Great Outdoors RV Resort.
